There was an unusual silence the moment I felt the plane lose altitude, a silence that came with a weird feeling that I have never felt before. It’s like the drums from the other end of the battlefield started to roll as a signal that the war is about to commence.
When I saw the snow-capped mountains below, I realized that I’m already 6500miles away from home. I have arrived on a new city in a new world.
This city is a lot different than where I come from. You can barely see people walking on the streets, no heavy traffic and before you can cross a street, you must push a button on a pole. People come in different colors, shapes and sizes, speaking languages I have never heard before. The day is a lot longer here and the wind is chilly even on a hot summer day.
My mind has been flooded by the word “change” since I came here.
As I was walking away from the Immigration counter, I was thinking about home. What time is it there? What are people doing? What are they thinking of?
There was a rush of ideas, a sudden need to go back home. But when I saw my mom waving and calling for us, happily bouncing of excitement, I realized that this place COULD and SHOULD be home.

I had never even considered the cross walk button to be something so strange to someone. Or the time the sun goes down. Or the chilly wind. I tried really hard to think of things that might amuse you and your brother but I suppose the simple things – the things part of my everyday life – are pretty strange and amusing.
The great thing about Canada is that you’re not only on this journey of change. We’re one of the biggest countries of immigrants from all over the world and as Canadians, we take pride in our multicultural nation. You and your brother will fit right in. This country is loving.
But I’m biased. I’m Canadian through and through. I’ll let you be the judge. :)
thanks May. by simply walking around your place, I learned a lot when I got back to mom’s place. many many things are new to us. I thought it wouldn’t be that shocking because I did my research back home. But it’s more interesting to know the simplest things people do here.
“multiculturalism” must be the word of the year of me. haha. ive read about it a million times on the manual. but i really admire how people are welcoming and courteous even to strangers.

Haha, he’s a Labrador/German Shepard mix. Weights about 90 pounds.
